Kickoff Post Javascript Magazine right around the corner

Argh!  Upgrading and I lost the earlier blog post describing the kickoff of JSMag!  And nothing had indexed or archived it.  Well, Google had indexed it, but didn’t cache it.  ???  Have I put some sort of “no cache” tags someplace I wasn’t aware of?

Anyway, we’re looking to have a good first issue, which should be out March 2.  We’re running in to some scheduling issues, and March 2 *might* not happen (probably 20% chance it might not at this point).  If it doesn’t we’ll still be launched the first week of March, 2009.

Initial articles for the kickoff issue include:

  • The Object Literal pattern
  • Community News
  • ExtJS – an introduction
  • Testing with Windmill
  • Unit testing Javascript with YUI
  • What’s new in jQuery 1.3

We’ve got some other articles in the works that *might* be in issue one.  If not, they’ll be in April 2009 – these are “Functional programming in Javascript” and “Debugging Javascript without the alert()”.  We’ve got much more lined up in the coming months – this is just a rough idea of the types of articles you can expect.

On that topic, I should mention that the focus of the magazine will likely be Javascript topics that are somewhat more advanced than your average “hide a div” tutorial.  There’s nothing *wrong* with those types of pieces, and we may run some from time to time, but the focus will aim to be on the more advanced side of Javascript.  Future articles will include pieces on server side Javascript, security, optimization and other topics of interest to you, the reader.

Original blog post (archived by Google Reader):

Getting closer! We’re still on track for our launch date of March 2, 2009. The premier monthly PDF magazine for Javascript will finally be available!

Yeah, that’s a bit of a narrow claim, no? :) Might be the *only* one, but it’s still the premier, and it *will* be good! Promise! We’re taking the expertise gained in producing GroovyMag and bringing the same efforts and lessons learned to producing a monthly Javascript magazine to help you get the most from Javascript.

So, what can you expect? Our initial tentative article line up includes:

    * Introducton to ExtJS (Brett Harris)
    * The Object Literal Pattern (Rebecca Murphey)
    * UI Testing with Javascript (Matt Henry)
    * Functional Programming with Javascript (Robert Fischer)
    * Unit Testing your Javascript with YUI (Adam Christian)
    * Community News (Matt Henry)
    * What’s new in jQuery 1.3 (Rebecca Murphey)

As with GroovyMag, the JSMag PDF magazine will come with example code for your hacking and learning pleasure. Also, as with GroovyMag, JSMag carries a price tag of $4.99 per issue. The tentative page count will be in the 40ish pages per issue range. Depending on feedback and reaction we will look to expand that number up with more specific types of content in the following months.

Again, this is tentative, but looks to be on track. The content is in, and is being reviewed by our editors, and will be going to layout in the next few days, getting finalized for March 2.

We’ve put this blog out here to start getting more conversation going from all y’all (we’re down here in the US “south” so can say that with a straight face!). So we close (or open?) with this: What would you like to see in a Javascript magazine? You can answer here in a comment, or sign up at the home page to be notified (and comment on what you’d like to read about!)
